Only minutes to Portland, located on the eastern shore of the Willamette River, Milwaukie is a comfortable mix of well-established neighborhoods and new housing developments. Situated between the Willamette and Clackamas River, Milwaukie offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming. Other recreational amenities in Milwaukie and its vicinity include: the North Clackamas Aquatic Park, the Springwater Trail, and a Willamette River boat ramp.
The Springwater Corridor is the major SE segment of the 40-Mile Loop which was inspired by the 1903 Olmsted plan of a parkway and boulevard loop to connect park sites. The eventual developed trail will be over 21 miles long. For the most part, the trail is well separated from the public road. The route is a scenic one, encompassing wetlands, buttes, agricultural fields and pastures, residential and industrial neighborhoods. Close to Johnson Creek, one of the last free-flowing streams in Portland's urban area, the trail criss-crosses the stream, weaving through Milwaukie, on its course to the Willamette River. The Corridor connects several parks and open spaces including Tideman Johnson Nature Park, Beggars-tick Wildlife Refuge, the I-205 Bike Path, Leach Botanical Garden, Powell Butte Nature Park, and Gresham's Main City Park.
Currently, the downtown area of Milwaukie is undergoing a revival in which new apartments and retail space are under construction and a riverfront park is being developed. Existing attractions include a Sunday farmer’s market and restaurants, coffee shops, hair salons, and stores. Other businesses at home in Milwaukie include Bob’s Red Mill (a modern-day gristmill and natural foods company), and Dark Horse Comics, which is known for publishing works including Sin City and the original graphic novel 300.
Milwaukie is served by the North Clackamas School District and most children attend one of ten public elementary schools, Rowe Middle School, Alder Creek Middle School, Rex Putnam High School, Milwaukie High School, and New Urban High School. Since 1996, Milwaukie High School has annually hosted the nationally recognized Living History Day. On this day thousands of veterans are welcomed into the school to help educate students about the past. There is also a private Catholic high school, La Salle High School, named after St. Jean-Baptiste de la Salle, and the Portland Waldorf School, which serves grades K-12.
Gladstone
South of Milwaukie lies the town of Gladstone. Featuring "Auto Row", a stretch of McLoughlin Boulevard offering auto dealerships for almost every make of foreign and American car, Gladstone is the "go to" place for car shoppers. Located on the east bank of the Willamette River, Gladstone provides 112 acres of park land providing year round opportunities for recreation in the great outdoors.
Public schools in Gladstone are served the the Gladstone School District; a three-school public school district. The district's schools are John Wetten Elementary School, Kraxberger Middle School and Gladstone High School.
